PROJECT - The Symphony Alarm
In samenwerking met studenten van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) verkent STT de toekomst van water, in het bijzonder het thema waterrechtvaardigheid. Deze vijfdelige serie, onderdeel van Toekomstverkenning 104 en het KABK-masterprogramma, laat zien hoe speculatief ontwerp kan bijdragen aan nieuwe perspectieven op toegang, eigenaarschap en de betekenis van water. De vijf projecten nemen je mee langs denkbare waterwerelden die vragen oproepen over hoe we samenleven met water: nu en later.

The artifact is designed to let nature alarm us, but nature also alarms us on its own, where do you encounter warning signs, and do you listen/act upon them?The Symphony Alarm is a robotic system designed for Iceland’s Hengill region, to protect the people and the animals that live there by warning them of earthquakes.
Location: Hengill, Iceland
The Hengill region of Iceland, a region once known for its geothermal power plants, buzzed with human activity, extracting energy from the earth’s core. However, today’s landscape seems like a different world. The machines have stopped, and the land bears the scars of exploitation. The geothermal area is now disturbed due to power plants abusing the area's hot water sources. This caused a rise in induced seismicity, and, over time, these earthquakes have contributed to the formation of surface cracks, allowing hot steam and gases to escape to the surface, creating an otherworldly fractured landscape.
The Symphony Alarm is created as a tool for safety by harnessing geothermal steam from fumaroles to create harmonic sounds, serving as a gentle yet urgent alarm for people and animals. The artifact, a rock-like robot, is hollow and contains vents ending in small holes. The steam will run through these vents and escape through the small holes, producing a whistling sound.
When fumaroles stop, the robots use thermal cameras and GPS sensors to locate new ones, navigating Iceland’s rugged and unpredictable terrain.
This project explores speculative futures, environmental responsibility, and human adaptation to an increasingly volatile planet.
De Toekomst van Water
Deze projecten zijn ontwikkeld in samenwerking met masterstudenten van de opleiding Industrial Design aan de KABK onder begeleiding van ontwerpersduo Cream on Chrome. De resultaten zijn gebundeld in de publicatie Mapping Water Futures. Het project was een oefening in speculatief ontwerp met als focuspunt waterrechtvaardigheid: het onderwerp van STT 104 De Toekomst van Water.
In deze samenwerking verkennen we hoe toekomstonderzoek en speculatief ontwerp elkaar kunnen versterken. Door mogelijke toekomsten tastbaar te maken, brengen de studenten verborgen waarden en perspectieven naar voren. Hun materiaalkeuzes, ontwerpbeslissingen en visuele uitwerking bieden nieuwe aanknopingspunten om na te denken over onze relatie met water, technologie en rechtvaardigheid. Elk speculatief artefact vormt daarmee een uitnodiging om samen te verkennen welke toekomsten we ons kunnen voorstellen en welke we bereid zijn werkelijkheid te maken.
